So much for “Total Information Awareness”

First, an anecdote: last Thanksgiving we at my wife’s parents in Baton Rouge. We were trying to call my sister-in-law who was in Barcelona. Through a dialing mishap, my mother-in-law accidentally ended up with a recording saying something like “phone calls to Afghanistan are not permitted.” (The country code for Afghanistan and the internal city dialing code for Barcelona are the same.) We made a bunch of jokes about how they’d link my wife back to her parents’ address through the phone records and we’d be sure to be stopped at the airport on the way home, but, of course, nothing ever came of it.
Well, if either of us were named David Nelson, apparently it would be much harder.
