The New York Times reports on the winner of a type design contest held by the University of Minnesota Design Institute. The font, called “Twin,” takes the old Adobe “Multiple Master” idea to a new level with three axes of variability: formal/informal; hard/soft, and plain/weird.
The image above is derived from me playing with the type browser and trying to assess my own personal “position” on each of those axes. I’ll admit that I didn’t care much for the type on my first few drafts, so I adjusted further until I thought I had one which looked pretty nice.
In addition to manual manipulation, the site provides “weather reports” — pages where the type characteristics are determined by the current temperature or wind.
Cool.
