Jazz Not Dead II: Now That’s What I’m Talkin’ About

I recently commented on the slightly morbid nature of the program for Chicago’s 2004 Jazz Festival. Today I came across an interview with Louis Moholo on the occasion of his being put on the program for the 2003 International Classical Music Festival of South Africa
I mean, if any music has a reputation for being more obsessed with dead guys than Jazz, it’s Classical music! Yet here these folks are taking the chance to program a living legend (in my book, at least) and in a context which almost anoints him as a full-fledged “serious musician”. At least, that’s my read on being included in a classical festival, although it is called out on the programme under the heading “jazz concerts.” Actually, it appears that they sent Moholo (with the beloved Irene Schweizer) on a tour of four dates around South Africa.
