Most of today’s show is stuff that emerged during the week. I always used to bring music of my own to shows, but iTunes makes it so much easier; whenever something comes up on the ol’ random play that catches my ear, I just pop it in the “upcoming shows” playlist.
My favorite this week among old tracks of my own that reasserted themselves into the show is “Cryptic Remark” by the
Jeb Bishop Trio. My favorite of finds from the station’s collection would be “Mevlana” by The East New York Ensemble de Music — I actually had someone call in to ask what it was while it was playing. For the benefit of those who couldn’t hear it, it’s a
reissue of a 1974 album (originally
released on Folkways). It’s co-leaders play reeds and vibraphones but there are several other musicians. It fits into that general vein of mystical afro-jazz which was happening at that time. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to listen to the whole album too closely since I just found it today, but it seems worth further investigation.
Speaking of vibraphones, today’s show ended up having an odd weight towards tuned percussion, what with the steel drums on the Johnny Dyani cut, and of course Max Roach’s M’Boom project, and the vibes-driven track I selected from the Northwoods Improvisers album. I don’t think this is a bad thing. It does remind me that I’ll have to dig up my copy of “Paucartambo” by the Gerry Hemingway trio, which is still the finest example ever of steel drums in a Jazz recording.
