WNUR Jazz Show, August 26 2004

Today’s show was a bit hectic; I accidentally left my stack of personal CDs at home, so I had less music ready to play than most weeks. I was kind of scrambling most of the time. I suppose I could have taken advantage of the nearly 40 minutes provided by a long Pharoah Sanders track followed by Scott’s set, but instead, I was just stacking up interesting things without picking songs from them!
One of the interesting things found was Mistakes, a 1979 duet album between Sean Bergin and Ernst Reijseger. I had just read the section in Kevin Whitehead’s New Dutch Swing focusing on Reijseger and had made a note to look for that album. At first audition, it sounds very promising. (On the way to work today I got on to the section on Bergin and it seems as though I’ll be looking for more of his stuff — Whitehead gushes about “Kids’ Mysteries”.)
I’m in a gushing mood about the group “Free Fall”, a project featuring Ken Vandermark exclusively on clarinets (B-flat and bass) and with a lineup “inspired by” the Jimmy Giuffre/Paul Bley/Steve Swallow group that recorded the album “Free Fall”. So far they have only one recording, on Wobbly Rail, but it’s really a super album.
