WNUR Jazz Show, September 2 2004

Not a lot of insightful commentary about this weeks show. I was pleased to find that the Lounge Lizards are still recording, and Queen of All Ears sounded pretty good.
Scott made his set this week from “on-the-spot” exploring the library, rather than bringing it from home, and he said he was pretty excited by his finds. I was in the back previewing tracks for the rest of the show, so I didn’t get to hear much of it…

Struts 1.2.2 whoops

Well, unfortunately, it looks as though the Struts team moved a little too quickly to vote Struts 1.2.2 as GA. It turns out that some code which depends on JDK 1.4 crept in (a couple of cases of Boolean.valueOf(...)), and I guess the wrong version of Commons Validator crept into the binary distribution.
Martin Cooper is working on a Struts 1.2.3 release which should go up for a vote next week. As a committer, I’ve gotten sort of indifferent about release numbers. My theory of open source is that you should treat open source projects as extensions of your local code base, not as products for which you depend on release cycles and such. At least, most open source projects don’t have such resources that a specific release number carries a lot more weight as “tested” or “vetted” compared to any nightly build. Obviously, when major development is going on, things are different, but Struts has been in maintenance mode for months now. (Some discussion on the list suggests this might change soon, but then again, we’ve had such flurries before.)
In short, though, if you use JDK 1.4, you can certainly use Struts 1.2.2 — you may just need to change the Validator JAR. We use Maven to manage dependencies, so that wouldn’t be an issue for us either, and might not be for you…
