Well, it’s finally over, and I really do think it’s over. No matter how hardnosed the Kerry campaign want to act, the numbers do not point to a possible win unless they find something to challenge besides waiting for the provisional ballots to be counted. I was inclined to be a bit depressed by the fact that the popular vote is in Bush’s favor, but it’s still clearly no mandate. I am quite ready to be a bit depressed that eleven states passed anti-gay-marriage bills (Michigan, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Oregon, and depressingly, my home state of Ohio).
At the risk of melodrama, I honestly have had Johnny Cash’s “I See a Darkness” running through my head all morning. On the other hand, US News was predicting a couple of weeks ago that John Ashcroft would be on his way out in the event of a Bush re-election. I guess we take solace where we can.
