I started this week off with an excerpt of a long live piece by Hamiet Bluiett’s late 70′s quartet featuring Fred Hopkins, Don Pullen, and Famoudou Don Moye. I hadn’t heard them as a group before, but it’s a very nice album, although the sound quality leaves a little to be desired. This track is the standout from the set (2 discs and over 2 hours of music), starting with Fred and Don Moye laying down one of those tight grooves that makes it funny to hear people call it “free jazz.”
Later in the show we dipped into an excerpt of another long improv with another of my favorite bass players, specifically, the new Unheard Music Series release of a trio recording lead by Swedish pianist Per Henrik Wallin with Johnny Dyani subbing in for his regular bass player.
This week I traded shows with Alain, so I’ll be on Friday morning.
