Purely by coincidence, I stumbled on two discs with original versions of tracks I know first from their presence on the classic album News for Lulu, a live trio performance by Bill Frisell, George Lewis and John Zorn featuring compositions by Sonny Clark, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Redd, and Hank Mobley.
Another interesting discovery was the Dave Holland/Steve Coleman duet album.

The real hit of the week would have to be Leo Cuypers’ “Alsdat de Oliphantstand.” This tune starts off on a rolling piano line, supplemented by electric bass and steadily builds up into a joyous little rave-up with a healthy dash of South African feeling.
Oh, and nothing against Philip Johnston, but the doubling-up from his new album on Innova was actually just operator error.
