This weeks show was quite relaxed compared to the heavy “pitching” of last week’s “phone-a-thon” edition. I was pretty impressed by Roscoe Mitchell’s “Song for my Sister,” which
is a couple of years old now, but which I hadn’t heard yet. It’s a really nice spread from free to tighter compositions, including the funky “Count Off” which I’ll play next week.

I was also interested to see the new Cooper-Moore/Assif Tsahar duet album, “Tells Untold”. I thought some of the tracks on their earlier “America” were pretty great,
and this one sounds like it has some promising followups.

As an aside, I also saw tell this week of what appears to be the “original” version of a song I played this week (and have before,) “Yakal N’komo”, as performed by the duet of Sean Bergin and Ernst Reijseger.
A posting of a Dollar Brand track on the great music blog Benn loxo du taccu led me to a South African jazz compilation with a song with a similar title. Unfortunately, it looks like that album is not in print, although a few folks are selling it on Amazon for not-a-fortune. I love the Bergin/Reijseger version of that tune, but I don’t know if I need what looks like a comp of relatively straight and/or familiar South African jazz just to hear another version.

Speaking of South African Jazz, I do believe it’s time to share some over on the Akwaaba Sound System blog…
