WNUR “Jazz” Show, 2008-01-22

Somebody listening called in extremely excited about the Howard Rumsey track and sounded like he might try to become a regular listener.  Also had a caller happy with Miles Davis and looking for more electric Miles.

The Vandermark Five are having release concerts for their new album “Beat Reader” at the Green Mill this Friday and Saturday nights.  I think I’m going to try to go on Saturday.

I found this nice link providing more background on the beautiful and strange daxophone.

Tune in again next week from 5 am – 7:30 am Chicago time at 89.3 MHz FM or online at www.wnur.org

PS I need to come up with a themed show for phoneathon in a few weeks — your suggestions are solicited!

Let it Shine: the SNCC Freedom Singers

Last fall I had the pleasure of seeing a concert by the SNCC Freedom Singers at Woodson Library. CAN TV was there shooting, and they aired the entire event in December. I’ve finally gotten around to figuring out how to get the video off of my TiVo and on to YouTube. (Interesting to see that iMovie now has an “upload to YouTube” share option which exports the video and uploads it. Clever way for Apple to “enforce” the specs they want used for video to be viewable on the iPhone.)

I cut the video up into individual songs. (You can click on the YouTube Playlist Button to call up a menu.) No disrespect to the speechmakers, but I didn’t post those segments. By a coincidence of timing, I’m able to post these for Martin Luther King’s birthday (observed) so please enjoy this music and remember to keep your eyes on the prize.

(That’s me in the purple t-shirt near the front, getting a few spots in the crowd b-roll.)

WNUR “Jazz” Show, 2008-01-15

I’ve been wanting to get back into the habit of posting my playlists, but have let various dumb things delay me. I’ve decided not to let the formatting bother me, and not to worry about providing commentary or links. I’m also going to “fudge” the posting times so that they appear to have been posted at the end of my show, not out of tricksiness, but because if I get compulsive, I may go back and post historical playlists and that will make more sense if they appear “at the right time.”

Remember that you can listen “live” from 5 am – 7:30 am Chicago time on Tuesdays, and you can actually follow the playlists as they happen via Twitter, at least for me and one other DJ who’s picked up on that idea. You can also make requests via phone (+1 847 866 9687) or IM (AOL Instant Messenger: wnurdj)
