It was fun to stumble completely unawares on an old LP by jazz cellist David Eyges.  I don’t know his work deeply, but he’s had a few collaborations with Arthur Blythe that I like; this one pairs him with Sunny Murray and Byard Lancaster.  It appears that it was reissued to CD, but probably not for long. The Clarinet Summit album was another nice gem from the vinyl stacks, where I too infrequently prowl for new things to share.  And the Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble provides another great track from the “Spiritual Jazz” compilation which I’ve been dipping into for a while lately…  (What is up with that group name, anyone know?)

  • “How did a publication with just a four-year run help shape a community so prolific that it went on to inspire Google, Craigslist, and the blogosphere; save six American rivers; and shape sustainable business practices as we know them today? Forty years after the first issue of the Whole Earth Catalog, this oral history of the publication, as told by those who made it and those who read it, tracks the long-lasting impact of a short-lived journal that altered the course of the world.”
  • “Hockey Moms release a swiftboat ad to air truth on Palin.”
  • “This is America. When we aspire to be better than we are, we change the world.
When John Kennedy asked us to go to the moon, we did. When Martin Luther King said he has a dream we’ve made his dream happen. When Ronald Reagan told the Germans to “tear down this wall” they did.
When we try to make the world better, we often do!
It’s time, my fellow Democrats, to start living that change.
Instead of blogging about our political opponents, can you learn about one issue that you care about and blog about that?
My issue is that I’m seeing high tech jobs leaving America for a variety of reasons.”
  • “When the Weiner’s Circle suspended the normal rules for how people should treat each other, they accidentally unleashed a lot of pent-up feelings that probably were pent-up for good reasons.”
  • “Civil liberties groups have voiced concern over plans to increase the length of time police store information on millions of UK car journeys.”
  • “According to study after study, rather than improving motorist safety, red-light cameras significantly increase crashes and therefore, raise insurance premiums. In fact, the only studies that have shown any benefit to red-light cameras were either done by the IIHS…the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or researchers funded by them. How very strange, don’t you think? The most recent study revealing the truth about the cameras was done by researchers at the University of South Florida College of Public Health.”
  • ‘The problem isn’t the researchers; it’s the products themselves. Companies will only design security as good as what their customers know to ask for. Full disclosure helps customers evaluate the security of the products they buy, and educates them in how to ask for better security. The Dutch court got it exactly right when it wrote: “Damage to NXP is not the result of the publication of the article but of the production and sale of a chip that appears to have shortcomings.”‘
  • “Cory Doctorow wanted a secret decoder wedding ring, and he asked me to help design it.”
