‘Mr. Malamud said his years of activism had led him to set a long-shot goal: serving in the Obama administration, perhaps even as head of the Government Printing Office. The thought might seem far-fetched — Mr. Malamud is, by admission, more of an at-the-barricades guy than a behind-the-desk guy. But he noted that he published more pages online last year than the printing office did.
…
‘“If called, I will certainly serve,” he said. “But if not called, I will probably serve anyway.” ‘ -

“In my ideal world, you could access mailboxes via web services. The advantage of this would be that you didn’t have to depend on local IMAP library support, nor would you have to deal with its slightly arcane semantics.
“So I pondered this for a while and would occasionally talk to people about it. One day, while working at CommerceNet, I mentioned it to Lisa Dusseault, an IETF Application Area Director and standards architect. She expressed interest in the idea and we ended up scheduling a few hack dates to simultaneously work on a standard spec and implementation for accessing IMAP via HTTP.
“The result was this IETF Internet-Draft and a rough implementation of an IMAP to HTTP gateway using this proposed interface. Lisa summarized this project on her blog. It was a very simple, RESTful approach using Atom for mailbox listings.”

WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-02-17
“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.
Thanks to Bob Sweet, author of the only published history I’ve seen on the CMS, Music Universe, Music Mind. For folks who got here from his mention on the CMS Update blog, check out past playlists for music that you are more likely to associate with the CMS.
This week’s show celebrates the music of New Orleans, in advance of Mardi Gras, which is next Tuesday… This is one of my favorite shows of the year, but next week I’ll be doing a theme show on the Creative Music Studio as part of our phoneathon fund raiser.
On the air I mentioned two great music blogs which are worth your time: Funky 16 Corners and Home of the Groove. Check ‘em out!

“While it may seem daunting, it is really important. If it is what you love, you’ll be good at it. You’ll be good at whatever it is that makes your heart beat fast if you just follow that path. You don’t have to be a scientist, although it’s great to have scientists turn their attention to the sea. We need those who are good at whatever it is that they are good at to use their talents. Is it with numbers or with law, with music? Use your talents to celebrate and do what you can to understand the ocean and bring others along.”
WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-02-10
“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.
Alas, this week technology did not cooperate, and there is no archive. It turns out that the software I use to archive my shows (Audio Hijack) had an unacknowledged “Update available. Install?” dialog which I hadn’t seen. My guess is that Audio Hijack was waiting for that to be acknowledged before going back to paying attention to the schedule.
Ah well. It was an OK show, but I didn’t leave feeling quite as good about it as I have the last couple of weeks. No idea why.
Probably the hottest tune on today’s show is Mary Lou Williams’ “Credo” (which happens to be available in a slightly abridged form from the great Funky 16 Corners blog). I just got that Oliver Nelson album from eMusic yesterday and it seems pretty promising so far.
Artist: “Track” – Album (Label)
Oliver Nelson: “Message” – Afro-American Sketches (OJC)
Chico Hamilton: “Blues Medley” – Man from Two Worlds (Impulse)
Cal Tjader: “Soul Sauce” – Soul Sauce (Verve)

Johnny Griffin/Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis: “Well You Needn’t” – Lookin’ at Monk (Jazzland)
Charles Mingus: “Solo Dancer/Stop! Look! And Listen, Sinner Jim Whitney!” – The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (Impulse)
Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band: “Volcano” – Volcano (Polydor)
Chris McGregor Septet: “Up to Earth” – Up to Earth (Fledg’ling)
Vijay Iyer: “Relativist’s Waltz” – Memorophilia (Asian Improv)
André Jaume Five: “The Coaster” – Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue (CELP)
Elvin Jones: “Whew” – Poly-currents (Capitol)
Misha Mengelberg/Steve Lacy/George Lewis/Ernst Reijseger/Han Bennink: “Reef” – Dutch Masters (Soul Note)

‘With this in mind, StinkyJournalism.org has asked the question: Is the “donation” of a citizen’s content (video, articles, commentaries, images) to for-profit media outlets that exceeds a fair market value of $12,000 in any single year subject to gift tax? Judging from the IRS guidelines, the answer is “yes.”‘

“Don’t feel inadequate if you aren’t lining your nest with the shiniest, newest things possible. Who cares what technology you use, as long as it works, and both you and your users are happy with it?
“That’s the beauty of new things: there’s always a new one coming along. Don’t let the pursuit of new, shiny things accidentally become your goal. Avoid becoming a magpie developer. Be selective in your pursuit of the shiny and new, and you may find yourself a better developer for it.”

“Meanwhile, back in the real world, the media business is being turned upside down by our new freedoms and our new roles. We’re not just readers anymore, or listeners or viewers. We’re not customers and we’re certainly not consumers. We’re users. We don’t consume content, we use it, and mostly what we use it for is to support our conversations with one another, because we’re media outlets now too. When I am talking about some event that just happened, whether it’s an earthquake or a basketball game, whether the conversation is in email or Facebook or Twitter, I want to link to what I’m talking about, and I want my friends to be able to read it easily, and to share it with their friends.”(From Twitter user @cshirky)

“Microfinance investment site MicroPlace.com, a subsidiary of eBay Inc., has another way to attract lenders: steady returns that match, or even beat, the bank. Fixed-income investors looking to use their money for social good are seeing returns on microfinance investments that surpass those of money market funds and certificates of deposit.
“MicroPlace is a registered brokerage firm — unlike Kiva, which is a not-for-profit organization — so lenders can earn a return ranging from 1.25% to 3% on their loans. (According to company founder Tracey Turner, that’s soon to be up to 5%). Given that the average return on a one-year bank CD is about 2.25%, that’s not too shabby.”

“The Austin Time Exchange Network (ATEN) is a local program that enables individuals to provide and receive skills and services within a network of people and organizations in Greater Austin. Similar to concepts expressed in bartering and alternative currency systems, this grassroots initiative lets members exchange labor and assistance without using the U.S. Dollar. Launched in April of 2006, ATEN currently has about 150 members and invites new participants to join by attending any of our upcoming introduction meetings.”(From Twitter user @vielmetti)

‘Wikileaks has released nearly a billion dollars worth of quasi-secret reports commissioned by the United States Congress.
…
‘CRS reports are highly regarded as non-partisan, in-depth, and timely. The reports top the list of the “10 Most-Wanted Government Documents” compiled by the Washington based Center for Democracy and Technology. The Federation of American Scientists, in pushing for the reports to be made public, stated that the “CRS is Congress’ Brain and it’s useful for the public to be plugged into it,”. While Wired magazine called their concealment “The biggest Congressional scandal of the digital age”.’(From Twitter user @justia) -

“Why a goat? And why so drunken? So it turns out my last name, Izard, is a type of goat found in the Pyrenees. Since I’m not the type to call my restaurant, “Stephanie’s,” I figured that was personal enough. The drunken part is because I called up my good friend Antonia from the show and was like, “How would you describe me?” And she said, “Uh, drunken?” She was just joking, but I love the Drunken Goat cheese, so it worked.”
