WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-04-21

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM.  It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

As noted on the air, some of this week’s program is a result of my Record Store Day binge. I am pretty sure you’ll be hearing a lot of that Johnny Dyani record in weeks to come.  Also as noted on air, this week led to the strange confluence of two separate requests for early electric Miles, specifically tracks from In a Silent Way and Bitches’ Brew.  Since I could, I filled those by turning to recordings from the “complete session” sets which Columbia released to milk the Miles archive for every last drop of revenue.

I forgot to mention on air that you can catch Edward Wilkerson (who appears on the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble track played) and Jim Baker (who appears on the Steam cut) in a new group put together by Michael Zerang tomorrow night (Wednesday, 22 April 2009) at the Hideout.

  • “Chopra demonstrates a deep understanding of the idea that the government is an enabler, not the ultimate solution provider. From the list of initiatives above, you can see that Chopra grasps the power of open source software, Web 2.0, user-participation, and why it’s better to harness the ingenuity of a developer community than to specify complete top-down solutions.”

WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-04-14

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM.  It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-5). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

Not entirely sure where my verdict on today’s show lands. I pulled more unusual stuff from the vinyl stacks than many weeks, including finding the fairly obscure Androids by Robert Rockwell (and I later realized that the track I played was included on the Soul Jazz compilation New Thing!) and also a vintage Microscopic Septet album. Everyone should enjoy “I Got the Feelin”, which was made available to us by Pieter of the great Sea Never Dry.

Ah, yes, also a reminder: you can go see Eight Bold Souls at the Hideout this week.
