WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-07-07

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

This week’s show was fun, and maybe a bit surprising.  The dynamic range from the Free Fall trio to Cookie Monster is pretty big (what units would you use to measure that anyway?)  Someone called wondering where he could buy the new Herculaneum record, which a gratifying thing.  (I suggested, of course, Jazz Record Mart and Dusty Groove as the most likely spots to pick up local artists on independent labels like Clean Feed.)

I was also happy to get a chance to check out the Jorrit Dijkstra album which Lauren used to start her show last week.  It’s completely live reeds and electronics (all under Dijkstra’s control) and it’s awfully cool.

Open question: who is C.P., to whom Dolphy’s ode is directed?

Also, I mentioned on-air that I’d discovered a free downloadable book telling the history of SOMAFCO, the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, which was a school-in-exile for South Africans affiliated with the ANC.
