WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-07-28

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

Another fun show this week. A question for you, o audience: a cellist named Diedre Johnson is credited on Larry Young’s “Lawrence of Newark.” Between the spelling of “Diedre” (the less common form of “Dierdre,” I think) and the fact that there aren’t that many cellists in jazz, I’m inclined to believe that she went on to become Diedre Murray, who played with Henry Threadgill and released a number of great albums with Fred Hopkins.  I couldn’t verify it, however.

I think my friend Chris will particularly like the Amina Claudine Myers take on Marion Brown’s “Sunday Comedown.”

Also of note: towards the end of the show I played a tune from a Tribe Records compilation, inspired in part by seeing Carleton Gholz’ collection of images of Tribe back issues on flickr.

Did you particularly like anything? Feel free to discuss in the comments…
