WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-07-21

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

This week’s show was extremely satisfying. For one thing, we had a nice infusion of new additions to the music library, especially featuring a number of local groups, like: Josh Berman’s debut album as a leader; a new album from Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Strings; the second album from the Chicago/New Orleans septet Lucky 7s; a quartet album from Lucky 7s co-leader Jeff Albert… and that’s just the stuff I fit into my show.  We also gave a nod to the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission with a track from Dollar Brand’s “African Space Program” (and I forgot to draw attention on air to the great Cecil McBee bass solo at the end of that track…) And I was very pleased to share an excerpt of a great improvisation from Mal Waldron and Johnny Dyani from an unreleased duo concert found on the Inconstant Sol blog.

I hope you enjoy this week’s show: as always comments are welcomed.

WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-07-14

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

This weeks’ show archived mostly, but it appears that the network throughput clogged up during the Atomic School Days number (which is a shame for you if you haven’t heard it, ’cause that’s a great tune…)  The Don Pullen track was also nice but you’ll have to take my word for it (or get your own copy…)

DKV trio is playing tomorrow (Wednesday) night at the Hideout, which is always a wonderful thing.

Enjoy what was captured from this weeks show, and as always, your feedback is welcomed…

  • “Using people’s brain waves as the notes, scientists have created music. The researchers from China took brain wave readings from EEGs as the original source and used complex math to create pitch and rhythm for the waves. If their methods were improved, according to the Neruotopia 2.0 blog, the music could be used to detect Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, or other irregularities in the brain. “
