“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.
Overall, I wasn’t really feeling today’s show, although I am very fond of the opening tracks — that “Roots and Branches” compilation is really chock full of great music. The Ironico Orkestra sounds like it has some potential — it’s all accordion/clarinet+bass clarinet duos from Montréal. And it was nice to have someone call in around 7 with both praise and a request–which yielded Sun Ra and another request–which yielded Ella’s famous take on “Mack the Knife” where she forgets most of the words but carries on anyway.
Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang are performing a rare non-Winter Solstice duo performance at the Hideout on Wednesday, and Spencer Barefield is playing this Friday and Saturday at the Velvet Lounge.
