WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2009-10-20
“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.
In all, I didn’t feel extremely inspired about this week’s show, although looking back over the playlist, I do feel like there is plenty of good stuff to hear: if you haven’t yet noticed two recent albums by young Chicago jazz groups, I direct you to check out Klang and Herculaneum: fie on those who wonder “is jazz dead?”
The archive starts midway through the first track because I started my show before the normal time: the DJ on air before me had pulled an extra shift because of a no-show and was ready to bolt out as soon as I got there. (Hooray for DJs who keep the station on the air, though — that’s been a problem in recent years at WNUR, but there’s a lot of really positive new energy this quarter…)

‘The “open kimono” approach was another unusual aspect of Friday’s gathering. Instead of keeping the discussions behind closed doors, NPR opened them up, broadcasting live from the group sessions and live-blogging and tweeting from the breakout groups. Reporters were invited to attend the event, and participants were notified that all discussions would be “on the record.” The thinking is that the more brains NPR can get working on the challenges it faces, the better the ideas that will be generated. ‘(sources: Twitter user @brianboyer (Brian Boyer))
