WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2010-06-29

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-5). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives.

I had a lot of fun with this week’s show, even though there were no callers. (There may have been some technical issues with the over-the-air signal, but the internet worked fine.)

Sadly, a good portion of today’s show was devoted to Fred Anderson, who passed away since last week’s show, and who will be sent home Tuesday evening. Even though I haven’t been to the Velvet or seen Fred perform in longer than I’d like, I was really moved to remember his kind and gentle presence at so many musical events of my past. Thank you for all the music, sir, and I can only imagine the jam sessions you can get into now…

Also, I misannounced the Occidental Brothers song before but not after it was played. They are in fact playing on Thursday at the Taste of Chicago and Saturday, July 10th at the Folk and Roots festival. Don’t miss ‘em!

Finally, welcome to Stephen who is doing the show after me this summer and who’d thought of calling his show “Conference of the Birds!” He started with “Interception” from the classic Dave Holland album and I left that at the end of this week’s recording.
