WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2010-10-05
“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-5). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives. You can subscribe to the podcast with this URL. You can also see one jumbo list of my past playlists (back to 9/2008 when WNUR started online playlists), for easier searching.
Several cuts on this week’s show came from great music blogs. Many of them are no longer actively posting, but you can still learn some more about the music on these pages:
- Volume 14 of the incredible African Serenades series: African Twist and Rock & Roll
- Captain’s Crate for Assagai and Enrique Lynch (Captain’s Crate stopped operating, but some of the principals went on to be part of Mixtape Riot
- The continually great Funky 16 Corners for the Fatback Band (people in New Jersey can go catch Larry Grogan DJ live, which I’d really enjoy… join the Facebook page)
Also, I mentioned the upcoming celebration (Nov. 19-21) of the AACM‘s 45th anniversary, in conjunction with this year’s Asian American Jazz Festival. See the MCA website for more details.
Finally, we noted that Nicole Mitchell was the victim of a horrible theft of two of her flutes, valued at $10,000 or more. Other members of the Black Earth Ensemble also had property stolen in the same incident. Creative music is not a big money field, and an instrument is an extension of a musician’s self, so it’s an even worse violation. Here’s hoping that some wise flute manufacturer sees the wisdom of offering Ms. Mitchell a sponsorship to help her get back in action (although according to the above article she was playing on a substitute instrument at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival within two weeks of the theft, giving life to the title of her album “Black Unstoppable”!)
