I never quite felt like this show hit its flow. See for yourself: three songs about the notorious “lickin’ stick,” plus some songs about zombies, and a bunch of other stuff.
Enjoy!
"Hey, I'm just happy to be here…"

Amidst a smattering of the usual stuff (although if I do say so myself, a few particularly cool dusty soul numbers), the main feature of this week’s show was a brief tribute to Jerry Leiber, who died on Monday. I played a couple very closely associated with him and his partner Mike Stoller (“Yakety Yak, “Hound Dog”), as well as some other Coasters stuff that is less typical, and a tune they wrote with Mike Love of the Beach Boys. Also some country stuff newer and older, and the trend for more regular jazz seems to be continuing as well…
Now that there’s a show on before me, I feel a little constrained in how I start mine: I don’t want a jarring transition, and Bob plays a pretty mellow show, so this week I started with a newish track from the local jazz group Klang. From there, I kind of felt like all the music I picked wasn’t quite right, so I am not sure how the track-to-track flow in this week’s show goes. (Feel free to let me know what you think!)
I did stick with the planned feature of the old blues tune “C.C. Rider”, performed five fairly different ways, along with a bit of soul and reggae I’d brought from home, as well as Chicago’s own Hollows paired with vintage Cambodian pop. But, I also dug into the new music drawer at the station and ended the show with about half an hour of stuff recently added to the jazz show library. As you might guess, I’m excited to find a new Nicole Mitchell album on Delmark, which I guess has been out a month or two. I should pay closer attention!
Enjoy!
Again, a theme-free show, ranging pretty widely from jug band to Stereolab and Ali Hassan Kuban to TV on the Radio.
The archiver successfully grabbed the first full track from John’s show (a number from the recent William Parker Organ Quartet album) so I’m passing that along to you at no additional charge.
Enjoy!
It was just a regular week! No clever theme, no problems with the archiver, DJs on air before and after… what to say? Unsurprisingly, it’s still largely music well suited to hot weather listening, if not as intentionally focused on such as last week. Some of that is jazz, some of it is Brazilian, some of it is both, some of it is neither. I think we also ended up with more than usual female singers, and I was excited to get my hands on the debut album by one of Chicago’s finest musicians, Harrison Bankhead, which ends my regular show.
It was nice to welcome John into the slot after me, and his first track fit fairly well on the heels of the Bankhead number, so I left it in the archive. I didn’t catch the metadata details, so consider that one a bonus track.
Enjoy!
