WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2012-08-28 (Mostly Ken Vandermark)

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-5). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives. You can subscribe to the podcast with this URL (click here to subscribe in iTunes).

WNUR’s online stream was down during this broadcast, so I reproduced the musical part of the show using Audio Hijack. You’ll have to imagine the commentary between tracks.

Most of the show dwells on the music of Ken Vandermark, who is the artist-in-residence at the Chicago Jazz Festival, which begins this week. It would have been easy to do the whole program (and weeks more of them) from his music, but I had a few other things I wanted to share as well.

In commemorating the passing of Neil Armstrong, I have a song from Mali about the Apollo missions. I also played Gil Scott-Heron’s confrontational “Whitey on the Moon.” On-air I mentioned that I personally still think there’s a lot of value to space exploration, but I also think it’s important to remember there’s two sides to every story, and Heron’s perspective was part of the historical context of the event. (Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal does a better job than I could talking about the recording.)

Enjoy!
