WNUR Conference of the Birds, 2012-11-27

“Conference of the Birds” is my weekly radio program on WNUR-FM. It airs on Tuesdays from 5-7:30 am Chicago time (UTC-6). And, of course, when technology cooperates, you can just come here for the archives. You can subscribe to the podcast with this URL (click here to subscribe in iTunes).

I wasn’t able to spend as much time preparing for this week’s show as I generally prefer. I sort of wandered into a mini-feature about Don Cherry, partly inspired by reading Ken Vandermark’s notes for the new DKV trio box set in which he tells how Don Cherry’s music was a “creative trigger for the band.” Outside of that, I went through some more recently acquired music and came out with what I think is a pretty solid show, although one which may be slightly more challenging for the pop-music oriented birds out there.

Enjoy!

PS DKV Trio is celebrating the release of the box set by playing their annual holiday gig, plus another bonus at the Hideout: December 26 and 27.

PPS I found this fun accounting of Don Cherry’s time on the faculty at Dartmouth.

  1. Thanks for linking to my Don Cherry at Dartmouth story.
I visited WNUR once with Dao Strom, on tour, summer of 2009.

This is a random segue but the Dartmouth performing arts center had a Sam Rivers poster framed in their cafe for a whiles — it’s surprising when the ultra-straight college gets a lil bit funky…
