Wired News reports on a US congressional bill, “The Motor Vehicle Owner’s Right to Repair Act” (H.R. 2735, S. 2138), saying “The legislation argues that consumers own their vehicles in their entirety and should be able to access their onboard computers.”
Not knowing too much about it, this sounds like the kind of thing I’d support, But it’s also interesting because of the language. This may only be Wired’s slant, but if consumers have a right to access the internals of their automobiles, why shouldn’t consumers have an equivalent right to access the source code of software they purchase?
