I guess the “run” had to end somewhere; I got home today to find the audio archiver “rebuffering stream”, which means that only about five minutes of the show got recorded before it got stuck, so no download for today’s show. Too bad, ’cause it was a good one.  I started with a reggae-tinged set (”Sons of Slaves” is a Junior Delgado “cover”, “Back of a Cab” is dedicated to legendary Jamaican keyboardist Jackie Mittoo, and “Ain’t No Sunshine” is a reggae cover of the Bill Withers hit.  I also enjoyed sharing tracks from the Andrew Cyrille and Oliver Lake shows I found on Inconstant Sol this weekend.

This week’s show was good fun. Kinda all over the place, but I think that’s how I prefer it.  I played more stuff from my personal library since I’ve been bingeing, but I am really pleased that I finally picked up the second Indigo Trio album.

I realize now that I totally forgot to mention on air this week, but some of the guys from Atomic are here in Chicago this week playing in mixed groups, culminating in guesting with the Vandermark Five on Friday and Saturday at the Green Mill.  I think I’ll be there on Friday…

Well, ain’t that a shame. I was pretty into this week’s show, and the archiving failed. At least this week it’s pretty clear that the issue goes back to my recurring issues with Comcast service, where I’ve had off-and-on access for a couple of weeks.  Since the archiver runs at home, that was that. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I was asked to play some Mexican jazz; the best I could come up with was William Parker’s Olmec project, which is actually pretty good.  Now that I think of it, I could have also played something from Gato Barbieri’s Viva Emilano Zapata, except that I don’t think we have a copy at the station.

Today is also International Midwives’ Day, as was reported to me by my friend Nikki, who is a nurse midwife and who came by the show today since she’s a WNUR alum (and an early riser), so we played Nicole Mitchell’s “Wondrous Birth” in honor of midwives (and mothers) everywhere.
