I'm working on a senior thesis that analyses Ghanian Highlife and remnants of American jazz in Ghana. Our resident musicologist here at Northwestern suggested that I get in touch with you because of some of the material that you've got here. Would you be able to point me in the direction of some of these recordings or send me individual mp3s? I'd really appreciate it as my thesis is due in about three weeks and some of these tracks would be a big help.

Hi,
That's a very eclectic program indeed.
I have a question though. What is the afro sample on Steinski: “Funk Construction (Prodigal Son Mix)”?
Thanks,
Pablo

Thanks for linking to my Don Cherry at Dartmouth story.
I visited WNUR once with Dao Strom, on tour, summer of 2009.

This is a random segue but the Dartmouth performing arts center had a Sam Rivers poster framed in their cafe for a whiles -- it's surprising when the ultra-straight college gets a lil bit funky...

Hi Joe,
I love your show and I loved hearing a song of ours on COTB a while back. I wanted to inform you of a concept piece we've written with another local composer that will be performed twice this month. We'd love to see you there. Here's all the info on the 2 shows. Thanks and keep up the good work!

The Modern Brain
written and performed by HardArt groop + Jumpsuit (John Elmquist, Grant Sutton, Nathan Tolzmann and Matthew Tolzmann)

Saturday, July 14th, 7:30pm
Temple Gallery
1749 S. Halsted

Second Show Added!

Friday, July 20th, 9:00pm
Quenchers
Fullerton and Western

Each performance will begin with a short set by Jumpsuit. Then HardArt groop micro edition will perform new works by John Elmquist, followed by the world premier performances of "The Modern Brain" featuring both groups combined plus horns.

"The Modern Brain" is HardArt groop + Jumpsuit's follow up to their 2007 collaboration "Cowtown: The Musical: The Opera".

HardArt groop is: “A rollicking synthesis of contemporary classical, cool noir and freewheeling improvisation…” -Ben Taylor, Time Out Chicago

“[Jumpsuit’s] got a sense of humor and playfulness and… they’re able to bring a little bit of their party right to your door… Addictive. “ –The Sentamentalist

HardArt groop + Jumpsuit's Cowtown: "...with songs about milk, football, eating meat, breathing meat, Siamese-twin-love… it was very mooooooving." -Blue Beer River

I have a <a href="http://blog.germuska.com/category/download/" rel="nofollow">'downloads' category</a> which is just shows that have accompanying audio. There's a built-in player so you can listen in your browser, or right-click/ctrl-click to download them for use in iTunes or other players.

I'd love to hear what you make of the music, good, bad, or other!

Hey, Chuck:

Glad you are digging it! You can download every show just by right-clicking on the link and choosing "save as". You could then load it up in any MP3 player and jump around to specific time-points.

In iTunes (and maybe in some other players), you can set up individual tunes to "remember playback position" -- it's more often used for audiobooks and podcasts. In iTunes you find it by opening up "get info" for a tune and going to the "options" tab.

Hope you hear more stuff you like!

Joe,

Great show. Is there a way to download it and/or skip ahead? I listen to about 30-45 minutes and then want to hear the end of the show next time and I can't figure out how to do that...

Concerning Arika's new book.

I think that the choice, realistically, for the future global language lies between English and Esperanto, rather than an untried project. As a native English speaker I would prefer Esperanto.

It's unfortunate, however, that only a few people know that Esperanto has become a living language.

After a short period of 121 years Esperanto is now in the top 100 languages, out of 6,800 worldwide, according to the CIA factbook.

It is the 17th most used language in Wikipedia, and in use by Skype, Firefox and Facebook. Native Esperanto speakers,(people who have used the language from birth), include George Soros, World Chess Champion Susan Polgar, Ulrich Brandenberg the new German Ambassador to NATO and Nobel Laureate Daniel Bovet.

Further arguments can be seen at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_YHALnLV9XU Professor Piron was a translator with the United Nations in Geneva.

A glimpse of Esperanto can be seen at http://www.lernu.net
